To most of us, the fragrance is a fashion accessory. We wear perfumes to compliment an outfit or our mood.
However, wearing perfume is as much of an art as purchasing one. You can’t just spray it thrice on different body parts and get done with it. That’s no way to wear a signature scent!
There is always much controversy around the right way to wear perfume. It's one of those rules of society that always seems to confuse everybody.
So we are here to set things straight once and for all, and provide a clear picture of how one should wear their perfume.
How To Apply Perfume?
Dos of Wearing a Perfume
Layer Your Fragrances
Layering always works. For example, put on an eau de toilette or cologne, then follow with a moisturizer scented with the same fragrance in lotion form. Or, if you are wearing an Eau de parfum, finish with a coordinating body powder or splash.
Layering fixes the scent to your skin for extended wear.
Use An Appropriate Fragrance
Ensure that the scent is appropriate for the occasion.
If you are going to a meeting, use mild fragrant perfumes. If you are going out with friends, you can use something heavy or overpowering.
It also depends on your mood and environment. For example, if it's summertime, you might want to wear something light like citrus or floral scents. If it's the rainy season, musky scents are perfect because they are warm and usually carry earthy tones.
Apply According To Your Skin Type
If you have oily skin, apply your fragrance to your clothing instead of directly to your skin. The oils can break down the fragrance. Also, alcohol-based perfumes might sting if applied over cuts or scrapes.
If you have dry skin, moisturize first. As stated above, fragrances last longer on moisturized skin.
Don’ts Of Wearing A Perfume
Wearing Too Much Perfume
One of the most common perfume mistakes people make is overdoing it. They apply too much of it, thinking that more is better.
It can be counterproductive because it can make you smell bad instead of good. There is nothing worse than being in an elevator with someone who has bathed in perfume or cologne! It can be overwhelming to the senses and just plain unpleasant.
The best way to wear perfume is to only apply one spray or dab on each wrist. If you are using a body mist, one quick spray will do the trick!
Applying Perfume To Sensitive Areas
Some areas of your body should never come into contact with perfume. These include your eyes, mouth, nose, and any other mucous membranes.
If you apply perfume near sensitive areas like these, you may feel irritation or even burning sensations. It is best to avoid applying perfume on or near these areas.
A perfume wearer should know these dos and don’ts. After all, a scent is only pleasant when used correctly!
